UWA provides a Casual Job Service to students enrolled at the University.
Casual, holiday and non-course related part-time work can be accessed through the Casual Job Noticeboard.
Registration costs $5 each year, and you will be required to present your current student card as identification to the Careers Centre. You should also be prepared to present your student card to an employer on request.
You should be aware that there are specific regulations relating to undertaking work for various visa holders. If you don't comply with these regulations and conditions, you could have your visa cancelled and be deported. General information is provided below. However students should consult their specific visa conditions before undertaking any paid employment. You can get further information through the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC).
Working Holiday Visa (sub-class 417) is for people from Belgium, Canada, Republic of Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Republic of Ireland, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Taiwan and United Kingdom.
This visa is for people aged from 18 to 30 years of age, who are interested in a working holiday of up to 12 months in Australia.
Important: Applicants must have turned 18, but not turned 31, at the time of visa application. This visa allows you to supplement the cost of your holiday through incidental employment.
If you are granted this visa you can:
- enter Australia within 12 months of grant
- stay up to 12 months
- leave and re-enter Australia any number of times while the visa is valid
- work in Australia for up to six months with each employer
- study or train for up to four months (full-time or part-time)
Note: If you applied for your Working Holiday visa before 1 July 2006, you may:
- undertake study or training for up to three months
- work for up to six months with each employer
Important: Your visa will have a condition limiting work with each employer to three months. However, all visa holders have been granted permission to work for up to 6 months with each employer.
Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462) is for tertiary educated people from Chile, Iran and Thailand.
The Work and Holiday visa is for those aged 18 to 30 who are interested in a working holiday of up to 12 months in Australia. This visa allows you to supplement the cost of your holiday through periods of temporary or casual employment. Most countries under this visa program have an annual limit of 100 Work and Holiday visas per year.
Note: You must not make arrangements to travel to Australia until you are advised that your visa has been granted.
If you are granted a Work and Holiday visa you can:
- enter Australia at any time within three months of the visa grant date
- stay for up to 12 months in Australia
- leave and re-enter Australia any number of times in the 12 months from the date of first entry
- undertake temporary employment in Australia
- study for up to four months.
All student visas are granted with a 'No Work' condition, although you can apply for permission to work after you have started your course in Australia.
You can work a maximum of 20 hours per week during the term and unlimited hours when your course is not in session. All students must study full time and meet the minimum attendance requirement of 80 per cent. UWA is required to report all students failing to meet the attendance requirements, which may result in the cancellation of the student's visa and deportation.
