Apply to study at CELT

You need a visa to study in Australia, to apply for a course and to apply to be registered for Overseas Student Health Cover.

Choosing a visa

You can study full-time or part-time for up to 12 weeks if you have a visitor visa or up to 17 weeks on a working holiday visa. If you want to study for longer, you must study full-time on a student visa. Please visit the Department of Home Affairs website for the most current and complete information about visa requirements and inclusions.

New student visa changes as of March 2024

On 23rd March 2024, the Australian Government introduced changes to English language requirements for international students seeking to study in Australia on a student visa (Subclass 500). Further details can be found at the Australian Government's, Department of Home Affairs website.

Overview of the recent changes

For students only studying English, there will be no change

For other programs including Degrees, Foundation and Diplomas:

  • The minimum score required for a Student Visa from an IELTS test score increases from 5.5 to 6.0 (or equivalent approved test, see below)
  • The minimum score required to undertake a packaged ELICOS from IELTS increases from 4.5 to 5.0 (or equivalent approved test, see below)
  • The test score required for students undertaking university foundation or pathway programs that deliver reputable English language training will be IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent).

Students must have completed the English language test within either:

  • The 2 years before the date your visa application is lodged
  • The 2 years before a decision is made on your visa application if you did not provide evidence of the English language test at the time your application was lodged.

Recognised tests

The tables below shows the accepted English language test and the minimum overall band scores you must achieve to meet the DoHA Student visa English language requirement.

Only TOEFL iBT scores from a test taken on or before 25 July 2023 are accepted for Student visa purposes.

**From 12 February 2024, only results from the paper-based Cambridge C1 Advanced test (previously known as Cambridge English: Advanced CAE) will be accepted for Australian visa and migration purposes. Test scores for both C1 Advanced paper-based and computer-based tests, taken before 12 February 2024, within the specified validity period are still accepted.

Please note: English Language requirements for student visas may differ to those needed to meet UWA course entry and students may be requested to provide different documentation as proof of English Language proficiency for each.
